Food & Water Watch is a lead organization on the steering committee of the statewide coalition, Floridians Against Fracking. Fracking and drilling associated with unconventional extraction of oil and natural gas poses a direct and immediate threat to the drinking water, air, food, health, wildlife, climate, and the economy of communities across Florida. South Florida is not immune to this threat. The oil & gas industry has applied for dozens of permits in Big Cypress and Everglades National Parks including a well close to the Broward/Miami-Dade border. The coalition has passed almost 90 county and city resolutions. These resolutions build local awareness, support and momentum for statewide legislation. We are working with legislators to produce bipartisan sponsored ban bills in the next legislative session. In South Florida we have hosted several educational film screenings, presented on fracking at local group meetings, and helped to pass several municipal resolutions including county resolutions and ordinances in Broward and Miami-Dade County.
